You may already know this, but 'The Mangler' is based on a short story by Stephen King which is a blast to read.

Tonight's 4K feature was Vinegar Syndrome's release of "The Mangler," a Tobe Hooper film I had not seen before. (VS has this habit of teasing "anonymous" offerings for sale, with the idea that maybe you'll get something good.)

In this case, they were right. It's a very bizarre and stylish film, with a lot of twists and turns and some great performances, particularly by Robert Englund as the (spoiler alert) evil owner of the factory, and Ted Levine as the main hero. And then it gets weird, and keeps getting weirder until it's almost a Sam Raimi film.

Plot--there's an evil laundry pressing machine who kills people, and the elites have to sacrifice 16 year-olds because reasons.

Image and sound are terrific. Ted Levine comes across as a beefy action-hero version of Martin Landau, and there's a photographer guy who I would swear was Dan O'Herlihy except that he wasn't.

It was way more fun than I was expected, and I'd recommend it. Vinegar Syndrome, after a bunch of negative recent encounters, gets a nice positive one.

After reading that description I'm trying to imagine a crossover between Vampire Hunter D and Fist of the North Star and all I can see is blood splattering everywhere.

Though this would make for a great bit of dialogue:

Kenshiro [pointing at a Vampire Lord]: "You are already dead."

Vampire Lord: "Figure that out yourself, did you?"

And five seconds later the vampire explodes in a ball of gore.

This was one of the three movies that lead me to becoming an Anime fan* and I can't tell you a thing about it save I saw it and didn't care for it. Fist of the North Star (the movie) came next (only like certain parts of it as I recall), then, at last, Project A-ko, whose goofy charms won me over. Back on topic, something about the story must have clicked, as I picked up the light novel (though picked up is all I've done.)

* I say "became a fan", but I'd been a fan for years without knowing it. Speed Racer, The King Kong Show, Battle of the Planets, Voltron, Robotech, on and on.

Tonight's Blu-ray feature was "Boccaccio '70" from Kino Lorber. It's an Italian movie from 1962 that's 3.5 hours long. And most of that running time is Italians shouting and gesturing at each other. As you can imagine, it gets wearying. Still, it looks great, the Fellini bit is the most Fellini I've seen in a while. And I seem to remember saying this earlier, but Sophia Loren is absolutely gorgeous (up to the present day) and she can act as well.

Is it worth it? Hm. Good question, for which I don't have a good answer. The Fellini and De Sica segments are great, the others...well, they have beautiful Italian people in them, so there's that. Image looks magnificent.

Could it have been Magic Story (1987) also known as Young Master Vampire / Jiang Shi Shao Ye / 僵尸少爷 (or sometimes Corpse Master / Kung Fu Vampire Buster)? I don't know anything about it (Though it is now on the List) but that's what Grok came up with when I asked, and I'm curious on Grok's reliability. Namely has it improved or is it still stupid?

Slight, mostly useless correction: We didn't watch any of the Mr. Vampire movies. The movie we watched DID have a very similar plot to Mr. Vampire II, with a kid jiangshi being pursued by his undead family. However, I am completely blanking on the title, and whether it was something you or Chad brought.

Well either all the construction workers were hard of hearing from working with noisy construction equipment for weeks on end, or Killdozer pumped all its experience points into its Stealth skill.

It's more serious and stays good throughout, unlike ItH, which starts GREAT and then gets pretty boring for much of it.

Actually, Gene Roddenberry did produce Spectre, so yes, that's probably a modified version of the Gorn suit,

The main thing I remember about Killdozer (saw the movie once or twice, read the story oh so long ago) was the Marvel Comics cover art adaptation. Their Killdozer was a little livelier than the movie one. Heck, it even spoke to threaten people!
